Words from Elder Chandon Herring in Washington DC

Hello family! Yes I have a second son born in the wilderness. His name
is Elder Lematua. He is a great kid and he is anxious to serve! He is
Samoan and is from Independence Missouri. He has verbally committed to
BYU as a full back. So he and I will see each other for the next
while. He is a good teacher and is trying super hard to be exactly
obedient and that is always a plus! more blessings! This week overall
was a little disappointing. We had a lot of meetings and only lessons
with members. All of our investigators were canceling, out of town, or
not there when we got there. We had some fun riding the Metro and
contacting though. Also let me know ASAP when and where Mason is going
ok?

Monday... WE ALMOST DIED!!!!! After writing home we were at the church
for a while then we went home to see the streets blocked off with bomb
squad and the water and power off and all that. We snuck around and
went to our room (wow, great idea Elders) and then left to the church again until it blew over.
We later found out that this guy ran up to the main entrance, set down
a big black bag, said a prayer, and then ran off. That is what we
heard but who knows. It was fun!

Tuesday... We had another great district meeting! We had a rockin
previous week where we knocked the goals out of the park (God humbled
me this week) But it was great to see everything come together. We had
lunch with Sis Mays. She fed us ribs and potatoes. I made the potatoes
for her and she is just great. If she really likes you she will make
you a blanket. She asked me what colors I wanted! I am so excited to
get it! I asked for a black and dark blue one. Then I challenged her
to put a Big white Y in the middle so we will see what happens. She is
really the best! We then had to go out to the mission office to get a
new car. It is a 2013 Ford Fusion. It is a lot bigger than a Corrolla!
Then we had to hurry home to meet the Apartment coordinator E. Colson,
He and his wife are incredible, and we got the new stuff for my son.
We set up and re arranged because we have a small room and it is hard
to fit it all! Then off to the VC to pick him up. We got him and were
late getting home because President had a mini transfer meeting to
make them feel more welcomed. It was fun.

Wednesday... Today was great. We now do 4 hours of study because E.
Lematua needs to do language study for Portuguese. right after we were
off to the temple. We did initiatory then were going to try to do a
session but we had an appointment move up so we could not.  it was
a great way to spend the afternoon! We took the super long drive down
and met Haggai. She is a recent convert who is in a tough spot. Her
Muslim family stole her passport and visa and other things because she
was baptized. So ya. But she is great and has a super strong
testimony! Then Institute. We had a good night catching up with
members and meeting them.

Thursday... BE CAREFUL AROUND OLD PEOPLE WHO LOVE FAMILY
HISTORY!!!!!!!!!! They lure you in with an offer for free lunch and a
quick 1 hour lesson on it. NOOOOO!!!!! Then they hold you there and wont
let you go for 4 hours! I did learn a lot but it was a really long meeting!  (No offense Sis Carriger...haha!)
Then we had a quick weekly planning session because we had to go and
get the stake coordination numbers ready. We have a big report as an
area and then as DL I get to make more for all the wards that my
district has. So it took a while. To help it all our appointments cancelled. :(

Friday... Our streak of cancelled appointments continues. I had good
studies and we had a training meeting, lots of meetings this week,
and then we had our online time. We spent the evening on the Metro
talking to people. I had a great experience talking to a guy. True he
was odd and I think a terrorist but it was a good talk. He ended up
taking a copy of the BofM and when I asked him if he would he said
that he could not promise he would read it everyday but he would
respect it and treat it like a gift. It was cool. I also enjoyed
watching my two kids talk. They did such a great job and they truly
love what they are sharing. I can see it and so can the people around
them. We had a good talk all three of us with two German girls on the
platform. They were visiting and moving so we convinced them to stop
by the temple. they were awesome!

Saturday...We had a less active come to basketball this morning and we
played for a while! It was good and Dad would be so proud of how much
better I am getting. I am still no good but I am getting better. We
helped clean the chapel because only two people showed up. That took
up the morning and then comp study then online. We Then got a call
from our appointments saying that they could not meet and we were sad.
But then we got a call from the other singles ward saying that they
had two investigators that they were going to hand off to us at the
VC. So we drove out there and waited for them... and waited... and
waited.... and then they called and cancelled so we drove home because
it was time with no lessons. It was sad. But once again. The Lord is
humbling me.

Sunday... Today President Cooke came to our ward. He came and spoke
with Bishop Gish about getting more missionaries for the ward.  It was good and I think we will get them. The sacrament meeting was a mess. The
coordinator for it did not show up and he did not call a sub to
organize it. So 5 minutes before it starts the missionaries are
running around trying to find bread. Luckily we had the APs to help
pass. It all worked out. We also had a theory that no one in the ward
council looked at the progress report we presented so we put our
appointment with bishop on it saying he is going less active and needs
friends. They did see it and that was good, haha. We then had a great number
of people sign up for our meal calendar thanks to the pic we put on it
of us crying holding cup of noodles. It was fun. The ward members
wrote on the back, "Thats low bro." and "The Pity Party 2-8-2015" It
was good! Then a lesson with members at the VC that night. It was
good.

This was a good week but it was a little irritating having so many
appointments cancel. But life will go on and there is something that I
needed to learn from this. Thank you all for your love and support! Have
a great week!
