Words from Elder & Sister Long in Oregon

"Monday we drove to Roseburg for breakfast with the Roseburg Zone missionaries at the home of the Powells. They are a sweet couple who put on a monthly breakfast for the entire zone (about 30 missionaries) once a month. It was great to meet them and all the missionaries that we will be working with in that area. Next we drove to Myrtle Creek to see the flat that the current senior couple has. We will move into it in another week and a half. I had just the night before prayed that it would be a good flat for us. In particular, that it would have stairs that would help us to get our exercise and keep us in shape. Also that it would be light and airy. Well, guess what, it is all of those things. This flat should be a nice place for us for the next 17 months.

Tuesday was interviews with President H. Jeff Russell. Wow, what a job he has, to get to know 250 missionaries who are constantly coming and going from the mission. Pray for those Mission Presidents and their wives, they do a mighty work.

President Russell also told us about the JustServe.org website where people and/or organizations can sign up to give or to receive service from others in the community. Check it out in your area and see if there is somewhere you can help out. Also think of those who need help and invite them to use the website for find volunteers to help them.

Wednesday and Thursday we mostly knocked on doors of less active members of the church to see what we could do to help/encourage them. Pretty sweet to get to know such good people. Friday went to district meeting where our young district leader gave some great training on how to love people we don’t yet know. Then it was off to another church building in Eugene where about 100 missionaries gathered to surprise the president’s wife, Sister Russell, on her birthday. That was fun – being there with such sweet young people sing Happy Birthday to another of our own who is out serving the Lord.

After that we hurried off to the Portland Temple where we barely made the 3pm session. We were blessed that our friends, the Byers, were officiators in that very session. Carl and Joanne Byers served with us in the England Birmingham Mission in 2009-2010. After the temple they treated us like visiting royalty. Very sweet of them.

Saturday afternoon we met with our local and ward missionaries, and the ward mission leader to correlate the work in the ward. It sure is nice to work with such a great bunch of dedicated people who love the Ward members, active and inactive.

Sunday was church which was great. Then we visited some more people in the ward.

Monday was p-day, in the evening we enjoyed a dinner appointment with the Ganirs who are ward missionaries in our ward. They have served two missions to the Philippines and we had a great time sharing ideas of how to effectively invite others to come unto Christ. Sweet people, dedicated people.

We love serving, our hope is that we will be able to help some sweet family find love and peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come."
